Cord Blood Transplant Cures Sickle Cell Disease

Cord Blood Transplant Cures Sickle Cell Disease

Sickle cell is a painful and life-threatening disease that places a significant health burden on the African American community.  The only cure for sickle cell disease is a transplant with blood-forming cells from a healthy donor.  The source of these cells can be bone marrow, peripheral blood, or umbilical cord blood.  Unfortunately, there is a shortage of cord blood units in the National Marrow Donor Program for this ethnic group. The Hawaii Cord Blood Bank is trying to increase its cord blood donations from African American families so we can improve access to this potentially life-saving therapy. Please help spread the word!
